Welcome Snow

Great job the last two weeks tackling The Westing Game!  Your enthusiasm and overall participation was much appreciated as we worked to figure out “who dun it”.  Keep it up as we move on to our next novel—The Landry News—a story of an ambitious fifth grader named Cara who begins a newspaper under the guidance of her rejuvenated teacher Mr. Larson.  Cara and Mr. Larson soon run into legal problems, though, after publishing a controversial article about divorce.  Our discussions this week will range from plot and character constructions to our understandings of the First Amendment to our Constitution.  It should be fun.  We will begin the novel on Monday.  Have a great weekend!  Don’t forget about the vocabulary quiz on Monday!!!

DUE DATES

Monday 11/15- Study for vocabulary quiz

Tuesday 11/16- Visit sites in “Lesson Resources for Students” and skim brief synopsis of The Landry News.  Then, read chapters 1-3 (if not completed in class) and post a response  to the following question in the discussion section of our class D2L site: Name and briefly explain three reasons why Cara begins publishing The Landry News in her class.

Wednesday 11/17- Read chapters 4-5 and TYPE a response to the question assigned in class about freedom of the press.  MAKE SURE YOU SAVE IT AND SEND IT TO YOUR EMAIL ACCOUNT AND MY EMAIL ACCOUNT (eric.wolffersdorff@mu.edu) SO YOU CAN ACCESS IT IN CLASS.  You and three others from the other three group questions will combine your answers into a newspaper in class on Wednesday.

Thursday 11/18- Read chapters 6-8 and find 10 tricky vocabulary words from the section.  Then, using the internet, find the appropriate definitions for the words in context and write the proper definition in your notebooks.  See “Lesson Resources for Students” for online dictionary source options.  Be sure to write down the internet source and URL you used for this assignment.  Also, include the page numbers where the words are found in TLR so we can look at them in class.

Friday 11/19- Read chapters 9-10.  STUDY FOR A QUIZ TODAY ON THE BOOK SO FAR!!!  See “Lesson Resources for Students” for useful study guides and helpful hints for the short answers.

Please feel free to email me with any questions, comments, or concerns at eric.wolffersdorff@mu.edu.
